Walking with Sandy-lee

It feels like spring in London today. The sky is clear and blue, and the sun is shining brightly. I met my dear friend Sandy-lee for an early morning walk. I love that time of day. The sense of newness, the quiet, the cleanness of the air.

We are both new to the area and so I enjoyed noticing the different shops and cafes along the way. There was a man sitting alone in the window of a lovely café, reading a paper, with hot coffee.

We walked to the Thames and stood in the cool sunlight. The day was still waking up and so we were almost the only people there. We stood together just looking at the water for a while and talking.

We have both moved house recently and both encountered a number of problems as part of the move. Sandy-lee told me an amazing story though of God’s graciousness in a particular stressful situation. On their first night, they discovered their boiler was not working and they had no hot water for a shower. After many, many things going wrong, this was one thing too much.

It was late in the evening at the weekend and it would be difficult and expensive to find an emergency plumber. Sandy-lee was exhausted and upset and let God know about it. At that moment God, in His tenderness, said to her ‘What’s wrong? Do you not believe that I am a God of miracles?’

He asked Sandy-lee and her husband Ryan to pray. A little while later, Ryan went to put money in the car parking meter. At the same moment, a builder was leaving an empty apartment that he had been working on in their block. He and Ryan got into a conversation, and this man ended up fixing the boiler in their home that evening. It was such a rapid turn-around after they had prayed, and a fulfillment of God’s words to Sandy-lee, that He is a God of miracles – big and small.

We were struck by God’s goodness towards us. We are His daughters, His children, and He blesses us. Not because we deserve it , but because of His goodness and because He is perfect in His love. If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! (Matthew 7:11)
