Blaze of Lilies

I am reading The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield at the moment. It is so beautifully written. The pictures that Mansfield creates are so evocative and so truly lovely. Here is a little excerpt that seemed exquisite to me. It is the morning of the garden party and preparations are being made. The florist has just arrived with his delivery. This description is so beautiful:

There, just inside the door, stood a wide, shallow tray full of pots of pink lilies. No other kind. Nothing but lilies – canna lilies, big pink flowers, wide open, radiant, almost frighteningly alive on bright crimson stems … She crouched down as if to warm herself at that blaze of lilies; she felt they were in her fingers, on her lips, growing in her breast …

  1. Lilies are gorgeous. I love digging some up in the fall, and transplanting them elsewhere. They are so low maintenance too.
I hear some cultures grow the bulbs for food . Anyway I love the colors of these ones Birgit.
