The Long Road Back

I joined the gym today. Well, I re-joined the gym I should say. I stopped my membership earlier this year because my former gym was a bit far to travel to. I hoped that  home-based work outs would be the answer, and I even bought a DVD . The thing I found was that home-exercise is fine as long as I was doing toning or conditioning type exercises. Cardio work created more of a problem because it involved a bit more jumping and running around, and that’s not so good for our neighbours. We all live pretty close together here in London.

So anyway, I decided to take the plunge and join the gym again! I did my first class at lunch-time and it was pretty good. I tried to take things easy, and my muscles are deceptively OK for the moment, but I just know that tomorrow could be a very different story when the after-effects really show – ouch!

The thing I really liked was the feeling of my muscles being put to hard work again after ages of no real exercise. The sense of strengthening seems to kick in immediately. It gives me hope. I am very much at the start of a long road back to a good standard of fitness, but it’s great to have made a start.

I chatted with the instructor after the class and she mentioned the way we lose our fitness three times faster than we gain it – eek! That’s a really good incentive for keeping consistent with exercise.

I’ll let you know how things go. We’re about to go into winter time here and it’s already dark and cold in the mornings and afternoons, but I am going to ask God to help me battle the elements and build back to being fit and healthy .

  1. Good for you Birgit. :)) Im cheering you on. This time of year its kind of boring for me, since its getting too cold to ride, and there’s no snow yet for xc skiing. :(
I just don’t like gyms…… indoor excercises bore me to tears.

  2. Thanks for your encouragement, Bert. Yeah, I am really happy to have made a start. I hope you find something fun in the meantime until skiing season starts. God bless!

  3. It’s great that you joined a gym again. I stopped going to the gym and have to stick to a home exercise routine, which is not that easy,as one tends to skip it. I try to do a few yoga exercises every day, at least a few! My cardio exercise is not good at all, I tried to go running once a week in the park, but it does not happen. I should use the old treadmill in the basement, I just don’t like it…

  4. Do power-housework!! Vacuuming is good, but nothing beats a boogie with the kids…
