Finding Fitness Love

image

Today I sat on stationary bike and pedalled like crazy for 45 minutes straight! It was one of the few times I’ve tried a Spin class at the gym – and it was great! I have a feeling this class is really going to help with the fitness if my heart rate was anything to go by. It was pretty full on, but fun! The thing I didn’t like so much was having to stare at myself in the wall to wall mirrors the whole time I did it, watching myself turn every shade of red, ever!

Half the battle with fitness for me, is finding something I love. Once that happens, I’m hooked. Fitness becomes fun then! There was this one class at my gym in NZ which I had a passion for! The choreography was simple, but the work-out intense! I used to do it six times a week, I loved it so much :).

It was harder when we moved to the UK, because I couldn’t find anything to fill the gap. That was a big motivation for me to qualify as an instructor and teach my own classes. I loved it – choosing fun music, making up the routines, and then trying to push my classes to the max :). Of course, I eventually injured myself in the process as it was hard to keep up all those classes at such an intensity, but it was FUN! Friends from my college at university would come after lectures had finished, and it was like we were all getting fit and svelte together, he, he, it was great!  :)

So now I’m not teaching, I’ve been trying to find something again, and I may just have landed upon it today! I’ll have to let you know tomorrow when it hurts too much to move :). So, what do you love to do for fitness?

  1. So timely! I’ve been jogging since January. I’m coming up to the point where I really really need to push myself. I either have to find someone to jog with or find something else to do to keep fit. I find that the longer I jog, the more boring it gets, so I lose motivation and stop. I love aerobics but there is no class I can go to here. I might start doing circuit training and I also play tennis. That all sounds very good but gosh do I struggle with keeping fit! I’d much rather sit down with a nice glass of wine and a snack of something!!

  2. Hi Birgit, how’s things? Kate me sent this link - it’s great to see youyr blog. Funnily enough I was at an aerobics class tonight (they’ve just started in our church hall & are great) & was reminiscing about your classes at St. Giles! Never tried spin classes though - maybe I should. Glad you liked the pics of Anna too - she is a fabulous small person!
Lots of love, Kate (W) x

  3. Hi Kate and Simone - so lovely to hear from you both and it’s great to hear about all this exercise! :)
Kate - things are great thanks, and that’s so good you’ve got aerobics on your doorstep! Yeah, definitely try Spin if you want a change, it’s fun, hardwork and without the impact!
Simone - I remember our PT session jogs around that park in Oxford :) It’s so good you’ve stuck with it, but I know what you mean about it getting boring. Hopefully your circuit training will mix it up a little bit for you, and it will be more fun.
Love to you both, and let me know how you get on.

  4. I love to play soccer. I didn’t play much team sport as a kid but I did love to compete in sprint races and some medium distance too. Soccer is lots of short sprints and relies a lot on speed which I love. It really pushes you because your team depend on you to get to the ball first and you can’t have a slack moment when you are tired and want a rest!!! I thought I was reasonably fit until I played soccer. It is also fun because you get to meet other people, it is something healthy to look forward to at weekends, and it is really good for your mental focus. Playing a sport is to a very large extent mental. You also need to think about the way you treat your body during the week, your food intake before a game to make sure you are running on maximum capacity etc. In the winter it can be easy to let yourself go and winter blues can kick in. Its great hearing about the different ways people like to let off steam and get those natural endorphines going!!

  5. Hi my friend…glad you gave it a go, and that you loved it, even more so! Who knows, maybe you do that triathlon in no time!

  6. Hi Laree, it’s so good to hear about your soccer - how great! It’s really interesting what you were saying about the type of fitness needed for soccer - short bursts of energy, sprints, agility etc and how this is different from endurance sport like marathons etc. I have friends training for a triathalon and an Iron Man at the moment, and I really admire all the preparation that goes into developing that kind of stamina! It’s so true what you say about taking care of your body day to day, so that you get the best results when you do work out! Thanks so much for your comments, it’s great to hear from you :)

  7. He, he, he Desire! I was just writing about you and Petrus to my friend Laree, and then your comment appeared. :)
You both are so inspirational with your training - sun, rain or snow (literally). Love you both, and I just may join you one of these days :)
