Getting God’s Attention
We had friends over for a meal at the weekend. We talked about lots of things, and eventually came around to our relationships with God.
The question came up about attracting more of God in our lives, and is this even possible. God loves us without measure, and He is always present with us, so is it even possible to have more of Him?
Intuitively, my feeling was that it is possible. I remember times in my own life when I have spent lots of time with God, worshipping Him, talking with Him, cooperating with His work of growing me, and the result was a deep intimacy with Him. His presence seemed more tangible, His voice clearer, His power more evident in my daily life.
It’s not that He loves me any less when I allow distraction to get in the way, it’s just that I lose that closeness and His Spirit does not seem to be as strong upon my life.
So today I spent some time looking at it biblically; whether it is possible to experience God more intensely, whether it is possible to capture His gaze.
It seems that it is. So far I have found three qualities that seem to get God’s attention in a unique kind of way; three attributes that draw His focus and attract His providence and blessing:
humility
full commitment
a reverent fear of Him.
“This is the one I esteem [on this one I will look]: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at My word” – Isaiah 66:2.
For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him – 2 Chronicles 16:9.
But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him – Psalm 33:18.
I love it that I can cultivate the kind of heart and life that draws the attention of the Living God. That I may experience Him more intensely, and that He would be more powerful and evident in my life.
