Opportunity

imageI was talking with my father last night, and he said something that got me thinking.

Many years ago, Dad was being tutored in English and Spanish by a former hotelier who had spent his life managing big hotels in Spain.

During a lesson, this tutor said something about the hotel business which stuck with Dad. That is that if a hotel room is left empty at night, it is a lost and irretrievable opportunity. “I’ve always thought that that idea applies in many ways in life,” Dad said.

We were talking about opportunity and regret, and I thought his point was a very good one. The idea that each day is full of opportunity – for experiences, for relationships, for productivity – and if the opportunity of that day is neglected, it is lost.

For me, it was a reminder to be deliberate and to give my best. I am convinced that there must come a time where we look back over our lives and weigh things up. Our actions, our words, the way we treated people, the things we prioritised. When that time comes, I hope, by God’s grace, that I can look back with full confidence and with peace, that I gave my best and did right. That I loved people, forgave hurts, sought God, and served Him excellently in the work He had for me. That opportunity, was realised.

  1. Yes life is full of opportunities. The challenge for me is to be sure I can catch up on any time I have wasted. I try not to beat myself up for the times I have not grabbed opportunities to make the most of each day. I like to therefore remember the scripture “I will restore the years that the locust hath eaten.

  2. Hi Laree, I love that about God, that He gives us hope and grace, even for lost time or opportunities. Thanks so much for that verse that gives us that hope.

Thanks Em, for your reply below, lovely to hear from you XO :)

  3. Ahh Birgles, it’s so good to be reminded of this – that every day is precious and that we should make the most of each one. Em xx
