Some Things I Love About You …

Orange Daisy VII

It’s really early and the morning light is streaming through the window. It’s really beautiful.

I have this weird thing where once the light enters the room, I wake and can’t sleep anymore. So, no sleeping-in for me :) but I don’t mind, I love the early mornings.

Michael is pretty much the same way, and I half expected to see him when I wandered out this morning as he had got up before me, but then I realised something amazing about him. He had already left for work. It was really early, and he was already on his way.

As I stirred my coffee in the yellow morning sun, I was really struck with appreciation for him. And admiration. He is a really hard working person, really diligent, and really on to it, and a blessing to our small family of two.

Usually I’d probably have a thought like this, and then get on with my day, but I started to think about how God asks us to cultivate thankfulness. Thankfulness for all the blessings He gives us, but in particular, the people He gives us in our lives.

I guess it’s easy to take those closest to us for granted in a way. To not see them in the way we did at the beginning maybe; to not see the ways that they bless us every day with their affection and funniness and commitment. Maybe the opposite in fact, eek! Maybe we see their flaws more quickly these days, more quickly than our own even.

But there’s that verse in the Bible where God asks us to build each other up, to let other people know what we love about them and why they are special in our lives. The verse says “encourage one another and build each other up” 1 Thessalonians 5:11. I figure, what better place to start than with our spouses.

So, what are some of the things that you love and value about your husband or wife? Or your children, your best friend, or another special person in your life? What are some good things that you have found which come from cultivating thankfulness for the people in our lives?

  1. Hi dear Birgit.. .i have moved almost next door to you, Lesley has my new address. I so know what you mean by the dawn light, I wake up every morning at 6 am and have done, most of my life.
It wasn’t until Jesus knocked on the door of this heart, that I really appreciated the gift of Sonrise.
I walk my golden retriever every morning in the small park nearby, there is always someone out walking too and people are warm and friendly here.
Enjoy your writing journey, I wonder where it will lead you?
    Stay always blessed!

  2. Hi Rosalind, so lovely to hear from you, and what a lovely picture of your early morning walks with your dog. That’s so great you have moved nearby to London, I will ask Lesley when I go to the studio next week :). God bless.

  3. That is so great that you are grateful for your man. And what a wonderful analogy of how God desires for us to behave.

Oh boy! Now I get to talk about my man! :-)

He is funny. He is passionate. He is focused. He is intense. He loves the kids and me. He is industrious. He is productive. He is diligent. He is so handsome. He gets better all the time. I love him so much!!!

  4. I am greatful for friends who allow themselves to enter into relationships where the possibility of being hurt exists. They love as if there is no risk. I love that God uses them to teach me how to love and be vulnerable. But more than all of that, I love the Helper who came specifically to teach me all about the one thing I find hardest to understand – unconditional love.

  5. Hi @ngie, that’s so lovely! It’s so great to hear about all the things you love about your husband! :)

Hi Hope, that’s so true – friends who risk being open and vulnerable are such a blessing, it’s like their openness frees you to be the same way too. And God’s unconditional love, I know what you mean, it’s hard to understand, and also the most amazing, healing thing. God bless :).

  6. Such a great post Birgit. My husband loves the Lord! He is sensitive, loving, caring, protective, hard-working, committed, passionate about children and in helping them when they are struggling, supportive, understanding. He is my covering. He has been my pillar during the separation with my family. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE AND ADORE HIM! And praise God for giving me him!

    Love and blessings to you!

  7. Wow.. what a morning. I would be sitting there with my blueberry muffin and tea wrapped up in my quilt and the WOrd. I love the early mornings. This morning I was awaken by God and I wrote blessed cadence. It was about rhythm that He brings in my life. WHen I was posting it @ 2am, on my blog I realized how still it was in my house and the only one I cou ld hear were the soft snores of my husband, as i climbed back in bed I ran my hand through his hair and fell back to sleep. Is God all about mornings?

  8. Hi gchyayles – it’s really lovely to hear from you, thanks for stopping by :) It was so good to read about the way your husband is such a blessing to you. I love the description of him as your covering, and also your pillar through the time of being separated from your family, as if God has given you someone really strong and Godly and nurturing. Love and God bless.

Hi Heidi, wow, your early mornings with God sound so beautiful. I love the whole idea of having tea with Him and His Word first thing. Your cadence sounds beautiful too, and I’ll look forward to reading it. Is God all about the mornings? I really think so :) Even now, it’s dawn, and the stunning sun is rising behind the trees, it’s perfectly silent, as you described too, and there’s just a real sense of God’s presence and purpose. God bless.

  9. You know my hubby so well you could probably write screeds about how fab he is yourself… a couple of my faves would be his ability to let go of a hurt or grievance really quickly which I find hard myself, and the way he will never let me get low self-esteem especially in regards to my body or appearance. He is repulsed by worldy lust and ‘slapper’ culture and I really love that about him too. He can change i.e. grow instead of get stuck in a mistaken way of thinking, and that is apparently quite a rare gift in young men. Plus he has fantastic taste and an excellent set of genes :)

  10. Hi Ruth, hee, hee, hee re his “excellent set of genes” ;) Well, I can definitely see it in our very beautiful, very adorable nieces and nephews :) I know exactly what mean about your dear husband, and yes, I could write screeds. He is gem, and a true blessing of a brother. And yeah, he does have “fantastic taste” too, lots of love :).
