Autumn

image September 1st and the early touch of autumn.

I LOVE autumn, it’s my favourite season.

I love the way the air cools, but the sun still shines.

I love the crimson, pumpkin and butter colour leaves.

I love the feeling of moving between the seasons.

It also feels like the beginning of something new, a new season, a new month, another chance to reawaken hopes before this year passes into another.

I love that God’s mercies are always new and that He gives us new seasons both naturally, and spiritually.

Which season is your favourite? What do you love about autumn? Do you sense a new purpose with God for the rest of this year?

He changes times and seasons

  1. I’m ready for a change of season. I would like to feel something new…a new purpose. It’s fun to feel you are being used for His glory.

My favorite season would be Spring. New life…fresh plantings…warm, but not too hot…lots of johnny-jump ups and garden thrift blooming together…

Man! I’ve got two seasons to get through first!!!

  2. I enjoy all seasons when I can experience them to the extreme. long Winters with lots of snow, brief Autumns brisk and colorful, dramatic Springs bursting forth with newness, steamy sunny Summers with a body of water close by.

Here I like the rainy season from late November to early February because it is a drastic change from the ‘eternal spring’ the rest of the year.

    Lovely piece, Birgit.

  3. Yesterday, during my daily walk, I actually took a picture of an almost naked tree in my city! My friend said, “no don’t take a picture you’ll make it true!” HELLO! I love fall. It could be fall everyday for the rest of my life and I would be sooooo pleased. Birgit, I’m sending you a picture – don’t judge – I’m horrible. :)

  4. Me, too. I love autumn. My very favorite season is spring. Renewal. New Life. My least favorite is winter. The grey in the Pacific Northwest gets to me during that time of year, making spring especially important.

    Blessings,
    Roxanne

  5. Hi Michelle, I know what you mean about being ready for a change, I love summer but I enjoy the newness of another season. Your description of spring sounds lovely – I know this is way out of season, but I thought you might enjoy a reminder of your time in England during your favourite season – http://birgitwhelan.com/2007/05/27/something-beautiful/ :)

Hi @ngie, wow, your descriptions were beautiful too, of each season. As much as autumn is my favourite, like you, I love each of them, the contrast is wonderful :)

Hi Hope, your photo is gorgeous, I love it, thank you for sending it to me, the red of those leaves is amazing – especially contrasted against the green of the tree behind – you’ve captured it so well, love it! Bless you.

Hi Roxx, I know exactly what you mean about long winters. We seem to have long winters in the UK too, a lot of grey and cloud. It makes me LOVE a sunny day, and holidays away to summer-y places when we can :)

  6. Oh, Birgit, thank you!! It was lovely to see and remember the beauty of spring in England. We lived in a flat off a very busy street in Manchester. Our walk to church took us past some amazing old houses. The one thing that struck me, throughout the year, was the ivy growing on the houses. Outside our bedroom window the ivy grew along the brick garden wall. I spent many hours drawing it at different times of the day. A couple of your pictures brought all that back. Thanks. And the music…perfect choice!! ;)

  7. That’s so great Michelle, the ivy growing along the brick garden wall sounds lovely, and being able to spend hours in your garden drawing it, so nice :)

  8. I had a hard time with the Fall for a few years because of some traumatic memories associated but in the last year or so, God allowed me to see the seasons from His perspective and He healed me from the pain associated so I don’t have such a hard time anymore. I prefer the Spring and Summer seasons personally but I am learning to look at the purpose behind each season, both physically and spiritually. Love you B :)

  9. Hi G, sorry to hear of the bad memories and I thought that was so great the way that God has given you new, happier thoughts about this season.
I love thinking about the spiritual connections of the seasons too :) Love and hugs.

  10. Beautiful photo. Me too. Love the autumn. Can’t wait for pumpkins.

  11. I love the summer. It doesn’t snow here but there is something magical about a winter with snow.
I am very aware at the moment of how God takes us through spiritual seasons. Sometimes it is a cold dark winter and everythinf dies and then comes the spring and there is new life and a summer of blessings. I find it comforting to know that whatever the season- this too shall pass.

  12. Thanks Sarah, I know what you mean, pumpkins are one of the best bits of autumn :)

Hi rg, you’re just going into spring where you are, aren’t you? Same as my family in NZ :) Yeah, winter with snow is really beautiful, I agree :)

I really liked the way you described the natural seasons, and how we can see these reflected spiritually too, knowing that each season will pass.
