Making Way for the New

image My ‘angel’ friend sent me another text on Saturday night.

I was watching TV with Michael when it came, and as I read through it, the Holy Spirit gave me that tug on the inside and I knew He was wanting to communicate something important. To bring fresh understanding.

The text said … Matthew 9 verse 17, please can you prayerfully read this verse as I feel God wants to show you something … Jesus brings a newness that cannot be confined within the old forms.

And this is the verse – “Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins, or else the old wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

What an amazing picture of God wanting to do something new in us, but that this sometimes involves shaking things up and getting rid of old ways.

Things have been the ‘same old’ for a while now with God. Vision a bit dimmed. Apathetic in making my life uninterrupted worship to Him. Coasting. Settling.

But God never intends this for us. I’m realising that the buzz of the early days with Him is not the benchmark. He is the great I AM – not dwelling in my past experiences of Him, not dwelling in some exciting future vision, but here now and wanting me, and each of us, to be part of His Sovereign purpose today. It’s an adventure – whether I’m blessing my husband by cooking up his favourite meal, encouraging a friend over coffee, or whatever He has called me to today, it has purpose and great possibility in Him.

So I’m getting ready to shed my old wineskin. Defeated thinking, lowered expectations of God, coasting with second best – with new anticipation about the new wine that Jesus is about to pour out.
