San Francisco to Seattle

America - SF I

It’s 1pm, and I’ve just woken up! I feel so out of sync, it’s weird. It’s definitely the jet lag. We got home from the States yesterday, and I figured out I had been awake for thirty-one hours straight with all the travel. I went to bed at 8pm last night and I don’t think I’ve ever slept so late, or so long! :)

We’ve really had such a great time. I’m hoping to put together some photos over the next few days but here are a couple from the last week.

After our road trip (below) we spent a few days in the beautiful city of San Francisco. The photo above is of the Golden Gate Bridge and harbour, and the stunning fog that this city is known for. The fog apparently comes about because of how cold the water is (really cold if the beach is anything to go by) and the way this lowers the temperature of the air. On a clear day you can see back to the city across the harbour, from where I took this photo. I love the fog though. It really is quite breath-taking and moody-looking at times.

From San Francisco we flew north to Seattle to spend some time with family. This is another really beautiful place. In some ways it reminded me of Wellington, which is our home city in New Zealand. I got this impression quite strongly down at the waterfront. The cafes, the markets, the harbour looking back at the cluster of city buildings, even the scent and feel of the air – sunny and cold and fresh all at the same time. Everybody said it rains lots in Seattle but it was really sunny while we were there.

One thing I loved during our time in Seattle was buying coffee from the very first Starbucks store in Pike Place Market! I read that at the time that Starbucks was founded it was as a coffee bean roaster and retailer, and this store had really retained the ‘shop’ feel to me, with its high wooden counters and shelves lining the back wall, and without the big familiar cafe area with the big sofas. The atmosphere was great with really friendly baristas, lots of people, a guy playing his accordion at the door, and even the original logo! The twin-tailed siren.

The photo below is of Seattle from the ferry on the way out to Bainbridge Island.

Oh no Roxx, how did I miss that you were in the Seattle area? I would have loved to catch up! I’m sure there’ll be another time, so definitely then, huh? xo

  4. Two years ago we drove from Chicago to Seattle which has this great port atmosphere. We spend some time camping at the beach of Mora in the Olympic National Park, in the morning when we went out on the beach it was completely foggy but then the sun came out and it turned out to be a sunny day, warm enough to make us sunburnt, I think we wore three different layers of clothes that day… I loved the ocean and foggy beach there and the rainforest! The trees are amazing.
In 1999 we drove from San Diego all the way up to San Francisco. The coast road is stunning and we drove over the Golden Gate and stopped in Sausalito on our way up to Point Reyes. I just love the West Coast and I’m so happy you went up there, too!

  5. Birgit,
Sounds great. Sad but no worries all at the same time. I love you here and I love you there! :) Glad you enjoyed your time. And next time for sure.
    Blessings & lovies,
    Roxx

  6. Hi Susanne, wow, it sounds like you’ve had a couple of amazing vacations! I know what you mean about getting sunburnt – I even put on sun lotion, but it was scorching while we were in San Francisco and I guess we were out in it all day. Beautiful sunshine though, I loved it!!

The West Coast is gorgeous, huh? I hope you get to visit and enjoy it again :) ox
